English education is a part of the Academy’s general education. Since Air Force Academy means to ready the officers-to-be for their future tasks, the course design not only includes fundamental elements of reading, listening, speaking and writing of college English, but basic military English to facilitate its application. In freshman and sophomore years, cadets are to complete English courses (2 credits) each semester. These courses incorporate ALCPT into mid-term and final tests, and ECL test at the end of semester to serve as an indicator of English proficiency. Cadets acquiring an ECL score of 80 or higher are exempted from the English course of the next semester. For cadets struggling to catch up, we also provide make-up courses. To facilitate practical use of foreign language, we also host education activities such as contests of speech, recitation, short opera, spelling, writing and singing to spark the cadets’ interest.
